Femtech - An Industry To Watch

In 2016, a term was coined for an industry focusing on the technology, diagnostics, software and services in the women’s health sector. This sector includes solutions such as period-tracking apps, pregnancy and nursing care, sexual wellness, reproductive system health care and fertility tracking….to name a few. It was back in 2014 that I was watching this industry starting to develop as I right in the heart of the biotech space.

In our biotech industry it was companies like Modern Fertility, Progenity, Maven and InformedDNA leading the charge of womens health and genetics. Personally, I was interested in tele medicine. Face to face visits with a physician. I was interested in face to face video….as I was the person who was constantly face timing people to connect, rather than call, and they would pick up the phone with it faced at the ceiling, completely caught off guard.

Today, the movement of consumer driven healthcare, face to face physician interactions, and femtech is at an all time surge. Estimates suggest that around $200 billion is being spent on fem tech products each year. A top-5 investment area in digital health for several years now, personalized wellness and consumer healthcare technology, has generated $1 billion in funding since 2014. By 2025, the industry is predicted to reach $50 billion, according to Frost & Sullivan.

Tides are surely changing to cater to the woman and create solutions to make our lives easier and positively impact our health and wellbeing. After all femtech concerns 49.5 % of the world’s population.

These 6 solutions make our lives a bit easier in their own little way.

Natural Cycles - an FDA approved app cleared for the use of contraception that is 93% effective with typical use and 98% effective with perfect use. Using the temperature, or basal body temperature, the app works out where you are in your cycle. It identifies your fertility window and when you should protect or abstain from sex. Just wow!

Clue - A wealth of knowledge. Clue is a menstrual tracking app, an encyclopedia, a resource for your health and more.

Ferly - An audio guide app to feel more confident, healthy, and sexually empowered. I submitted the Typeform to find out more about what they are about. I think the topic of sex should be more fluid in the female communities. Look forward to learning more here.

EveryWell - I didn’t enjoy going to the obgyn and now I can with EverlyWell you can bypass the Pap smear and test yourself for HPV and cervical cancer. From hormones to food sensitivity to Ovarian Reserve and Sleep and Stress….EveryWell has it all.

Glow - Whether trying to get pregnant, considering fertility treatments, wanting to preserve your fertility, Glow can help. PS….they also raised

Milkstork - For the business woman juggling it all, Milkstork makes shipping breastmilk easy so you can take care of business. Not necessarily for childless me but I’m sure taking one thing off a working mothers plate lessons the stresses of being away.
